The Art of the Perfect Glow

Why Timing is Everything for Your Spray Tan

HOW IT WORKS

The Art of the Perfect Glow

For many, a golden, sun-kissed glow is the ultimate accessory for a special event, a weekend getaway, or simply a boost of confidence.

Spray tanning has become a popular and safe alternative to traditional sunbathing, offering a quick and effective way to achieve a beautiful bronze without the harmful effects of UV radiation.

However, timing your tan is the key to achieving the perfect result.

The 48-Hour Golden Rule

If you’re after a flawless Saturday glow, the ideal time to get your spray tan is on Thursday. This "48-hour rule" is not an arbitrary suggestion but is rooted in the chemical process of how spray tans work. When sprayed onto the skin, the DHA in the spray tan solution reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin cells, causing a browning reaction.

This chemical reaction doesn't happen instantaneously. While you will see an immediate bronzing effect from the cosmetic bronzer in the solution, the real color from the DHA develops over several hours. It can take up to 24 hours for the tan to fully develop, and another 24 hours for it to "settle" into the skin. This settling period is when the color evens out, and achieves its most natural and radiant appearance. By tanning on a Thursday for a Saturday event, you are giving your skin the right amount of time to go through the process, resulting in the perfect glow up.

Planning Your Perfect Tan: A Weekend Timeline

To further illustrate the importance of timing, let's break down a sample timeline for achieving the perfect weekend glow :

What If I Can't Tan on Thursday?

If a Thursday appointment isn't feasible, a Wednesday night tan can also yield beautiful results. While the tan might be slightly more developed by Saturday, the difference is often minimal and still provides a gorgeous, natural-looking color. The key is to avoid tanning on the same day as your event, as the color will not have had enough time to fully develop and settle.

Glow The Week Away

- Once you've achieved your perfect glow, you'll want to make it last. Here are a few tips for maintaining your spray tan:

Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise: Keeping your skin hydrated is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your tan.

- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Soaps, body washes, and exfoliants containing sulfates and other harsh chemicals can strip your tan.

- Pat, Don't Rub: After showering, gently pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing. Friction can cause your tan to fade unevenly.

- Use a Tan Extender: Many tanning salons offer tan-extending lotions that contain a small amount of DHA to help prolong the life of your tan.

By following the 48-hour rule and planning your tan in advance, you can ensure that your glow is at its absolute best when you need it to be. So, the next time you have a special event on the horizon, remember our advice: trust the timing, and your glow will thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Enhance My Tan Results?

Take-home products from Azure (sold in the studio) will enhance and extend sunless spray tanning results. Ask the team to explain and recommend the right product for your skin type and desired results.

How Long Will My Tan Last?

A sunless spray tan can last up to 5-7 days depending on the solution you select and the condition of your skin.

Can The Tanning Solution Stain Clothing?

The sunless spray tanning solution which includes a cosmetic bronzer is water soluble and will
be removed after the next wash in cold water. However, in some instances, the DHA in the tanning
solution may permanently stain undergarments worn during the spray session.

When Should I Exfoliate Before A Tan?

Exfoliate and shave the day before or the day of the sunless spray tanning session (day before is preferred). The day of the sunless spray tanning session refrain from using moisturisers, perfumes, lotions, oils or deodorants that may create a barrier between the skin and the sunless tanning solution. You may resume using these after your first shower or bath.
